The Java War was fought from 1825 to 1830 between the Dutch East Indies colonial government, together with allied Javanese princely courts, and Javanese rebels led by Prince Diponegoro of the Yogyakarta royal house. Long-building tensions over Dutch colonial centralization, taxation and land policy, combined with Diponegoro's own religiously inspired sense of mission, boiled over into open revolt in mid-1825 after a road construction project cut across land near his family estate at Tegalreja. Diponegoro's forces besieged the Dutch-held city of Yogyakarta and fought a prolonged guerrilla campaign across the Javanese countryside, until the Dutch commander Hendrik Merkus de Kock implemented an extensive network of fortified posts, known as the benteng stelsel, from 1828 to 1829 that steadily confined the rebellion, leading to Diponegoro's capture during negotiations at Magelang in March 1830. The war was extraordinarily costly, killing an estimated two hundred thousand Javanese civilians and twenty thousand combatants, and it left the Dutch-allied princely states of central Java stripped of much of their remaining territory and independence.
