Sovnya

A sovnya is a traditional Russian polearm with a curved, single-edged blade mounted on the end of a long pole, comparable to a glaive, used by late-medieval Muscovite cavalry through roughly the mid-17th century. The name itself is a modern label, established in the 19th century by Russian military historian A. V. Viskovatov, since the weapon was not actually called a sovnya during its period of use; the only historical reference to the term appears in the Novgorod First Chronicle describing a pointed weapon of unclear design, and scholars debate whether Viskovatov's translation was accurate.
