Chokuto

The chokuto, meaning straight sword, is a straight, single-edged Japanese sword mainly produced before the ninth century, with a basic style likely derived from similar swords in ancient China. Chokuto were used on foot for stabbing or slashing and were worn hung from the waist; until the Heian period such swords were called tachi, written with a different character from the later tachi that refers to curved swords.
