Smith & Wesson Model 59

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Smith & Wesson Model 59 is a double-action, semi-automatic pistol developed as an evolution of the earlier Model 39, going on the market in 1971 and remaining in production until 1982. Its principal innovation was a high-capacity, stagger-stack magazine holding 14 rounds, later increased to 15, feeding 9x19mm Parabellum ammunition through an aluminum frame with a straight backstrap, a blued carbon steel slide, and a magazine disconnect safety that prevents the pistol from firing without a magazine inserted. Weighing 30 ounces with a 4 inch barrel, approximately 231,841 units were manufactured during its production run.
