Walther P99

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Walther P99 is a semi-automatic pistol developed by the German manufacturer Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen of Ulm, designed by Horst Wesp to serve law enforcement, security personnel and civilian shooters. Development began in 1994 and the finished pistol was unveiled and put into production in 1997, replacing Walther's earlier P5 and P88 designs. It was chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W and 9x21mm IMI, and Walther announced that production would end in 2023. FAQs

Why does the Walther P99 use a striker instead of an external hammer?

A striker design is less likely to snag on clothing when drawn.

The Walther P99 was built around an internal striker mechanism rather than the more common external hammer. This lessens the chance of the pistol snagging on clothing when it is drawn quickly. The design also gives the shooter a visible and tactile indicator on the right side of the slide showing whether a round is chambered, and a red cocking marker at the rear shows the striker position.
