AEC armoured car

Armored Vehicles

The AEC armoured car is a series of British heavy armoured cars built by the Associated Equipment Company of Southall, England, during the Second World War, developed as a private venture from the chassis of the AEC Matador artillery tractor. A prototype shown at Horse Guards Parade in 1941 impressed Winston Churchill, leading to an initial order of 120 vehicles and eventual production of 629 units between 1942 and 1943. AEC aimed to match the firepower and protection of contemporary British cruiser tanks, and successive marks carried increasingly heavy guns, from a 2-pounder in the Mk I to a 6-pounder in the Mk II and a 75mm gun in the Mk III.
