D-30 Howitzer

Artillery And Mortars

The D-30, formally the 122 mm howitzer 2A18, is a Soviet towed howitzer designed by F.F. Petrov and built by PJSC Plant No. 9, entering service in 1960. Its distinctive three-leg mounting allows the gun to traverse a full 360 degrees, and it fires to a maximum range of 15.3 kilometers with standard ammunition or 21.9 kilometers with rocket-assisted projectiles. Although no longer manufactured in the former Soviet Union, it remains in production and service elsewhere, fielded by more than 60 countries including Russia, India, Myanmar, Iran, Angola, China and Finland, and its barrel assembly was adapted for the 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer. FAQs

Does the D-30 howitzer have limits on where it can fire despite its 360 degree traverse?

Elevation is limited when the barrel is over a trail leg, so full range is only possible in a central arc of about 48 degrees between each pair of legs.

Yes. The three-leg mounting lets the D-30 traverse through 360 degrees, but its elevation is restricted when the breech is over a trail leg: to 18 degrees on early versions or 22 degrees on later ones. A mechanical cam enforces this by preventing the piece from firing for about 60 percent of the total top traverse, which limits range to about 12 km. Full maximum range is only possible in the central arc of about 48 degrees between each pair of legs.
