The MAT-49 is a French submachine gun developed by the Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Tulle and first produced in 1949, chambered for the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge with some variants converted to 7.62x25mm Tokarev. It became the standard submachine gun of the French armed forces and saw extensive combat in the First Indochina War and the Algerian War before being phased out following the adoption of the FAMAS assault rifle in 1979. Beyond France it was used by more than forty nations and armed groups, including Algeria, Mali, Vietnam, Lebanon and Senegal. Why did paratroopers and vehicle crews favor the MAT-49?
Military Factory states: The MAT-49 proved acceptable in practical service - its collapsible features made it ideal for paratroopers and specialized infantry as well as weapons to serve with vehicle crews where space was often an issue.
Why did North Vietnamese forces convert captured MAT-49s to a different cartridge?
Military Factory states: In the Vietnam conflict, the North Vietnamese took on the surplus MAT-49s left behind by the retreating French Army and modified them to fire the Soviet 7.62x25mm Tokarev cartridge - understandable since the round was much more readily available throughout the region than was the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge.
