AGM-69 SRAM

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The AGM-69 SRAM (Short Range Attack Missile) is an American nuclear air-to-surface missile developed by Boeing, with the Lockheed Propulsion Company supplying its rocket motor, that entered service in August 1972 and was retired in 1993. Compact enough for a bomber to carry several at once, unlike the larger AGM-28 Hound Dog it replaced, the missile had a range of up to 110 nautical miles and a top speed of about Mach 3, carrying a W69 nuclear warhead of 170 to 200 kilotons. Its inertial navigation system and radar altimeter allowed either a semi-ballistic flight path or terrain-following flight, including an over-the-shoulder maneuver that let it strike targets behind the launching aircraft, and it was carried by B-52, FB-111A, and B-1B bombers to help suppress Soviet air defenses so the bombers could reach their targets. Roughly 1,500 missiles were built between 1971 and 1975 at about 592,000 dollars each. The Hound Dog was a very large missile that could only be carried in pairs by the B-52, so some aircraft were tasked with suppressing Soviet missile and radar sites while others would carry on to strike their strategic targets.
