The Eight Banners, or Baqi, was the foundational military and social organizational system of the Manchu people, established by Nurhaci in the early seventeenth century as the Jurchen tribes of northeastern Asia were unified into what became the Manchu nation, and served as the core fighting force that conquered Ming China and established the Qing dynasty in 1644. Bannermen were organized into eight divisions distinguished by colored and bordered flags, each further divided into companies, and banner status was hereditary, encompassing not only ethnic Manchus but also incorporated Mongol and Han Chinese banner divisions as the system expanded during the conquest period. As the standing military backbone of the Qing state, banner garrisons were stationed in Beijing and at strategic points throughout the empire, maintained as a privileged hereditary military caste separate from the wider Han Chinese population and supported by state stipends rather than ordinary taxation or land tenure. Though the Eight Banners' battlefield effectiveness gradually declined through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as garrison troops grew removed from active campaigning, the system remained the Qing dynasty's core military institution and a defining marker of Manchu ethnic and political identity until the dynasty's fall in 1912.
