Swedish Caroleans

Early Modern

The Caroleans were the soldiers of the Swedish Empire's army under kings Charles XI and Charles XII, most closely associated with Charles XII's campaigns during the Great Northern War from 1700 to 1721 against a coalition led by Russia, Poland-Lithuania and Denmark-Norway, and renowned among contemporaries for extraordinarily aggressive offensive tactics, discipline, and willingness to close rapidly with the enemy using cold steel after a single volley rather than prolonged firefights. Sweden's Carolean army was raised substantially through the indelningsverket, an allotment system in which Swedish farms collectively supported an assigned soldier with land, housing and pay, allowing Sweden to maintain a relatively large standing military despite a comparatively small population base. Carolean forces achieved a series of remarkable early victories against numerically superior opponents, most notably the 1700 Battle of Narva against a much larger Russian army, before Charles XII's invasion of Russia ended in catastrophic defeat at the 1709 Battle of Poltava, a turning point that broke Sweden's status as a dominant European power. The Carolean military tradition, with its emphasis on aggressive shock tactics and disciplined close-order infantry and cavalry, remains a defining reference point in Swedish military history and national memory of the Swedish Empire's rise and fall.
