Byzantine Army

Medieval

The Byzantine army was the military force of the Eastern Roman Empire, evolving over more than a thousand years from the late Roman legionary system into a distinctively medieval force organized, from roughly the seventh century onward, around the theme system, in which provinces called themata supplied and supported locally based soldier-farmers who could be mobilized for regional defense. Byzantine military doctrine, preserved in detailed strategic manuals such as the Strategikon attributed to Emperor Maurice and the later Taktika of Leo VI, emphasized discipline, intelligence gathering, diplomacy and calculated avoidance of unnecessary battle over reckless aggression, reflecting the empire's need to defend an often overextended frontier against Persian, Arab, Slavic, and later Seljuk and Crusader pressure with limited manpower. The elite core of the later Byzantine army included professional tagmata regiments stationed near Constantinople and, from the tenth century, foreign mercenary units including the Norse and English Varangian Guard. Byzantine forces achieved notable successes such as the reconquests under Emperor Basil II in the tenth and eleventh centuries, though catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 against the Seljuk Turks marked a turning point after which the empire's military strength never fully recovered before Constantinople's eventual fall in 1453.
