The Mongol army was reorganized by Genghis Khan at the 1206 kurultai on the Onon River, when he unified Mongol society into a decimal military structure. Every man aged fifteen to seventy was conscripted into a minqan, a unit of a thousand soldiers, itself subdivided into units of hundreds and tens, deliberately mixing members of different tribes to break old clan loyalties and build loyalty to the new Mongol state instead.
