Born Temujin, he united the rival nomadic tribes of the Mongolian plateau and in 1206 was proclaimed Genghis Khan, founding the Mongol Empire. He extended his rule over widely varied conquered populations through siege warfare and an extensive intelligence network used to study his enemies before campaigns, and the mounted cavalry his forces relied on combined speed with coordinated siege tactics to defeat established powers.
