Zulu Army

Modern

The Zulu army, known as the impi system, was the military force of the Zulu Kingdom in southern Africa, fundamentally reorganized and expanded under King Shaka Zulu in the early nineteenth century from earlier clan-based fighting traditions into a highly disciplined standing force organized around age-based regiments called amabutho, each housed in dedicated military kraals and bound by strict codes of discipline and cohesion. Shaka is credited with tactical innovations including the short stabbing spear called the iklwa, replacing the older long throwing spear to force close, decisive combat, and the buffalo horns encircling formation, using a strong center flanked by fast-moving horns to envelop and surround enemy forces, tactics that allowed the Zulu Kingdom to conquer and absorb numerous neighboring peoples during the Mfecane upheaval of the 1810s and 1820s. The Zulu army's discipline and tactical sophistication were dramatically demonstrated against British colonial forces during the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War, most notably at the Battle of Isandlwana, where Zulu forces inflicted one of the most severe defeats a modern European colonial army suffered against an indigenous force during the century, before superior British firepower ultimately prevailed later in the same war at battles including Rorke's Drift and Ulundi. Despite the kingdom's eventual defeat and later British annexation, the Zulu military system's discipline, organization and tactical innovation are widely studied in military history as a highly effective indigenous African response to the challenges of both regional rivals and colonial expansion.
