Anglo-Zulu War

The Anglo-Zulu War, sometimes called simply the Zulu War, was fought in present-day South Africa from January to early July 1879 between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, and included the Zulu victory at Isandlwana and the British defense of Rorke's Drift. It grew out of Lord Carnarvon's plan to confederate the territories of southern Africa on the model of Canada, combining political reorganization with military pressure to bring independent powers such as the Zulu Kingdom and the Boer republics under a British-led, white-minority administration; Sir Bartle Frere, appointed High Commissioner in 1874, pursued that plan against Zulu resistance. British forces, aided by the Colony of Natal and Boer volunteers, defeated the Zulu Kingdom, dividing Zululand afterward and exiling the Zulu king Cetshwayo to Cape Town following his capture at Ulundi, though fighting among rival Zulu factions continued afterward as the uSuthu-Mandlakazi conflict.
