The Armed Forces of Serbia and Montenegro were the joint military of the state union that existed from 1992 to 2006. Until 2003 they were called the Yugoslav Army, created from the remnants of the Yugoslav People's Army when the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia broke apart, and after the 2003 constitutional reform of the state they took the name used here. They consisted of ground forces with internal and border troops, a war navy, air and air defence forces and civil defence. The rump state took part in the Yugoslav Wars with limited direct intervention, and the army was heavily involved in fighting Albanian separatists in the Kosovo War and the Presevo Valley conflict and in engaging NATO aircraft during the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia. After Montenegro voted for independence in 2006 the force was divided, with the navy going to Montenegro and the bulk staying in Serbia.
