Indonesian Navy

Contemporary

The Indonesian Navy, known in Indonesian as Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut or TNI-AL, is the naval branch of the Indonesian National Armed Forces. It was founded on 10 September 1945, at the outset of the Indonesian National Revolution, and grew from the People's Marine Security Agency created in August 1945 from wooden ships, a few landing craft and weapons left by Japan. Its role is to patrol the long Indonesian coastline, enforce the law in the territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone, protect the country's maritime strategic interests and islands, and defend against seaborne threats. The Chief of Staff of the Navy leads it, and it is organised into three fleet commands and a military sealift command, with the Marine Corps under its command.
