Kampuchea Revolutionary Army

Contemporary

The Revolutionary Army of Kampuchea, often called the Kampuchea Revolutionary Army, was the official name of the armed forces of Democratic Kampuchea, the state ruled by the Khmer Rouge after the fall of Phnom Penh on 17 April 1975. The name first appeared in January 1967 for the independent Khmer Rouge armed groups, which fell into northeastern, southwestern and eastern factions. During the war against the Lon Nol government the force was reorganised as the Cambodian People's National Liberation Armed Forces, and it was formally established as the national army in July 1975. It was heavily equipped by China, with North Korea giving training and technical help, and an air force was added in 1977. After Vietnam invaded in late 1978 the army broke up, and in 1979 the remnants were reformed as the National Army of Democratic Kampuchea. The regime also executed former officers of the Khmer National Armed Forces after taking power.
