The Libyan Armed Forces were the national military of Libya. The original force under the Kingdom of Libya and King Idris I was trained by the United Kingdom and the United States. After Muammar Gaddafi rose to power in 1969, Libya received military assistance from the Soviet Union. The Libyan military fought in several wars, among them the Libyan-Egyptian War of 1977 and the Chadian-Libyan conflict of 1978 to 1987. The armed forces dissolved in the course of the Libyan civil war of 2011. After a second civil war, militias loosely grouped as the Libyan Army around Tripoli and the Libyan National Army in the east, under Khalifa Haftar, divided control of the country's armed groups.
