The Waffen-SS was the armed, military wing of Nazi Germany's Schutzstaffel, developing from the SS-Verfugungstruppe formed in the 1930s into a large combat force that fought alongside the regular Wehrmacht on every major front of World War II, eventually growing to include dozens of divisions and, by the war's later years, over 900,000 personnel drawn from both German nationals and foreign volunteer and conscripted units recruited from occupied and allied countries. Waffen-SS divisions, including elite units such as the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte and 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich, saw intense combat on the Eastern Front and in the West, developing a reputation among Allied and Axis observers alike for aggressive, often reckless tactical performance, while several of its units were also directly responsible for documented war crimes and atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war, including massacres in occupied Europe. Distinct from the Allgemeine, or general, SS, the Waffen-SS operated under Wehrmacht operational command in the field while remaining institutionally part of Heinrich Himmler's SS apparatus, blurring the line between the German military and the Nazi Party's own paramilitary and ideological security organization. At the postwar Nuremberg trials the Waffen-SS was declared a criminal organization by the International Military Tribunal, though a legal distinction was later drawn regarding individual conscripted foreign members, and the organization's wartime record remains a central subject of Holocaust and World War II historical scholarship.
