Charioteer (tank)

Armored Vehicles

The Charioteer, formally the FV4101 Tank Medium Gun Charioteer, is a post-Second World War British armored fighting vehicle built on an upgraded Cromwell cruiser tank chassis to give Royal Armoured Corps units still using Cromwells a more powerful anti-tank gun against Cold War Soviet armor. Manufactured by Robinson and Kershaw Ltd at Dukinfield, Cheshire, about 442 of a planned 630 were built, each mounting an 84mm Ordnance QF 20-pounder gun in a new two man turret on a 28.5 tonne hull with a top speed of 32 miles per hour. In British Territorial Army and export service from 1952 to 1980, it saw combat with Middle Eastern forces in the Lebanese Civil War and the 1978 South Lebanon fighting.
