BRDM-2

Armored Vehicles

The BRDM-2 is a Soviet amphibious armored scout car that entered service in 1962 and was first shown publicly in 1966. It replaced the earlier BRDM-1 in Soviet and Warsaw Pact armies, adding improved amphibious performance and heavier armament in a distinctive conical turret carrying a 14.5mm KPVT heavy machine gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun. Chain driven belly wheels help it cross trenches, and a water jet propulsion system gives it amphibious capability, powered by a GAZ-41 V8 gasoline engine producing 140 horsepower. About 7,200 were built between 1962 and 1989, and the vehicle was widely exported, remaining in service with at least 38 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
