2K6 Luna

Artillery And Mortars

The 2K6 Luna was a Soviet short-range artillery rocket system that carried the GRAU designation 2K6 and was known to NATO as the FROG-3 when armed with the 3R9 high-explosive rocket and the FROG-5 when armed with the 3R10 nuclear rocket. Its rockets were solid-fuel, unguided and spin-stabilized, and they were fired from the 2P16 launch vehicle, a modified PT-76B chassis fitted with a launch rail. Development began in 1953 at the NII-1 institute, with the TsNII-58 institute designing the launch and transporter-loader vehicles, series production was ordered in December 1959, and the system entered Soviet Army service in 1960. About 432 launchers were built between 1960 and 1964, and from 1965 the improved 9K52 Luna-M, known as the FROG-7, replaced it. Its first combat use came with Egypt and Syria in the opening stage of the Yom Kippur War in October 1973, where the rockets proved only marginally effective, and a small number remain in North Korean service.
