The Yom Kippur War, also known as the 1973 Arab-Israeli War or the October War, was fought from 6 to 25 October 1973 between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria, with most of the fighting occurring in the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights, territories Israel had occupied since 1967. Egyptian and Syrian forces launched a coordinated surprise attack on Yom Kippur, and the war ended in a ceasefire that left Egyptian forces holding ground on the eastern Suez Canal bank and Israeli forces holding ground on the western bank and in the Golan Heights.
