Eritrean-Ethiopian War

The Eritrean-Ethiopian War, also known as the Badme War, was a major armed conflict fought between Ethiopia and Eritrea from 6 May 1998 to 18 June 2000. Relations between the two countries, friendly after Eritreas 1993 independence from Ethiopia, deteriorated sharply over disagreement about the location of their shared border, escalating into full-scale war that involved more than 500,000 troops on both sides and was, at the time, the largest war underway anywhere in the world. Both countries had invested heavily in armaments beforehand, and the war is estimated to have killed between 70,000 and 300,000 people combined and displaced a further 600,000. Fighting ended with an Ethiopian military advantage on the ground and an Eritrean diplomatic victory: the Algiers Agreement of 2000 and subsequent binding arbitration by the Permanent Court of Arbitration awarded most of the disputed territory to Eritrea, though Ethiopian occupation of some disputed territory continued for two more decades.
