Ogaden War

The Ogaden War, also known as the Ethio-Somali War, was fought between Somalia and Ethiopia from 13 July 1977 to 23 March 1978 over control of the Ogaden region. Somalia invaded in support of the Western Somali Liberation Front insurgency, escalating into a full interstate war. Ethiopia was saved from defeat by a massive Soviet-organized airlift of military supplies worth roughly one billion dollars and the arrival of more than 12,000 Cuban soldiers and airmen alongside 1,500 Soviet advisors; on 23 January 1978 Cuban armored brigades inflicted heavy losses on Somali forces, and the combined Ethiopian-Cuban force then prevailed at Harar and Jijiga, pushing Somali forces out of the Ogaden. Ethiopia declared the last border post recovered on 23 March 1978, ending the war in an Ethiopian-allied victory; Somalia broke with the Soviet bloc afterward, and the defeat helped trigger the start of the Somali Rebellion.
