Siege of Vicksburg

The Siege of Vicksburg was fought from 18 May to 4 July 1863 in Warren County, Mississippi, the final action of the Vicksburg campaign of the American Civil War, in which Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee besieged the Confederate Army of Mississippi under Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton inside the fortress city of Vicksburg. After more than 40 days under siege with supplies nearly exhausted, the Confederate garrison surrendered, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River and ending in a Union victory.
