The Battle of Midway was a major naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II fought on 4-7 June 1942, six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Two United States Pacific Fleet carrier strike groups under Chester Nimitz, Frank Jack Fletcher and Raymond Spruance decisively defeated the Japanese Combined Fleet under Isoroku Yamamoto near Midway Atoll, ending in an American victory.
