The fall of Constantinople was the capture of the Byzantine Empire's capital by the Ottoman Empire on 29 May 1453, the culmination of a 53-day siege that had begun on 6 April under Sultan Mehmed II against the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos. The city's fall ended the Byzantine Empire after more than a thousand years, and both sides suffered heavy losses in the final assault, with Constantine XI killed in the fighting.
