The Normandy landings were the amphibious and airborne operations carried out on 6 June 1944 by Allied forces, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and France, against Nazi Germany, opening the Allied invasion of Normandy under Operation Overlord. Commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower against German coastal defenses under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the operation, also known as D-Day, is described as the largest seaborne invasion in history and ended in an Allied victory with five beachheads established in Normandy.
