Isaac Brock

Modern

Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was a British Army officer and colonial administrator from Guernsey, remembered as the Hero of Upper Canada. He joined the army as an ensign in 1785, rose to lieutenant colonel of the 49th Regiment of Foot, and served in Holland in 1799 and at Copenhagen in 1801 before his regiment was posted to British North America. Promoted major general in 1811, he was made responsible for defending Upper Canada and prepared the regulars and militia for an American invasion. When the War of 1812 began, quick victories at Fort Mackinac and Detroit checked the first American attempts, and his success at Detroit earned him a knighthood in the Order of the Bath. He was shot and killed while leading a counterattack at the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October 1812.
