Stielhandgranate

Grenades And Explosives

The Stielhandgranate is a family of German stick hand grenades fielded from the First World War through the Second, nicknamed the potato masher by Allied troops for its wooden-handled shape. The Imperial German Army introduced it in 1915 after soldiers in the field found that improvised handled explosive charges, nicknamed hairbrush grenades, threw farther and more accurately than the standard-issue Kugelhandgranate, a roughly one-kilogram ball grenade with a range of only 15 to 20 metres. Its design was refined through several patterns into the Second World War, when it served with the Wehrmacht until 1945.
