The Spanish Civil War was fought in Spain from 17 July 1936 to 1 April 1939 between the Republicans, loyal to the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic and including socialists, anarchists, communists and separatists supported by the Soviet Union and Mexico, and the Nationalist rebels under Francisco Franco, supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The war ended in a Nationalist victory, the establishment of Franco's Spanish State, and the end of the Second Spanish Republic.
