Missile weapons carried and thrown by hand in antiquity and in traditional societies, including slings, spear-throwers, composite bows, the Greek belly bow, lead-weighted darts and throwing knives. A weapon belongs here when its cited article describes it as a bow, sling, spear-thrower or other thrown projectile weapon. It excludes torsion siege artillery, which sits in the siege engines group. Slings, bows and spear-throwers allowed soldiers to strike from a distance, and ancient armies used skirmishers with these weapons beside heavy infantry in the Greek, Roman, Scythian and Korean worlds.
