Short and large-bored hand-held firearms of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, including turn-off pistols, blunderbusses, dragons and the cavalry petronel. A weapon belongs here when its cited article describes it as a pistol, blunderbuss or short firearm. It excludes long muskets, which sit in the muskets group, and artillery. These firearms were used by cavalry and by sailors and civilians for close defense, with the wide muzzle of the blunderbuss spreading shot at short range and the turn-off pistol loading from the breech end.
