Ground-Attack Aircraft and Gunships

Armored or heavily armed aircraft designed to attack troops and vehicles on the ground, including the A-10 Thunderbolt II, the Il-2 Sturmovik and the AC-130 gunship. A weapon belongs here when its cited article describes it as a ground-attack aircraft or gunship. It excludes fighters and strategic bombers. These aircraft fly low and slowly to find and destroy tanks, bunkers and troops, and they carry armor, cannon, bombs or rockets, which makes them a separate role from the fighters that fight for the air.
