The Hotchkiss M1909 Benet-Mercie machine gun is a light machine gun developed and built by the French firm Hotchkiss et Cie, introduced in 1909. It is gas operated and air cooled, weighs about 12 kilograms, fires at 400 to 600 rounds per minute from a 30-round strip, and has a maximum range of 3,800 meters. It was used by British and French forces through both World Wars and was also adopted by the United States, Belgium, Sweden, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand, seeing notable use mounted on tanks and with mounted cavalry in the Sinai and Palestine campaign of 1915 to 1917.
