How did German machine guns influence the M60?
The M60 grew out of American experiments with German MG 42 and FG 42 features.
The United States paid close attention to German machine guns in the Second World War. An early General Motors attempt to convert the MG 42 to the American rifle cartridge failed. The experimental T44 of the 1940s then combined the action of the FG 42 machine rifle with the belt feed of the MG 42, and it served as a first step toward the M60.
