Type 99 Light Machine Gun

The Type 99 light machine gun was used by the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War, an evolution of the earlier Type 96 chambered for the more powerful 7.7 by 58 millimeter Arisaka cartridge, which delivered over fifty percent more energy than its predecessor. A key change removed the oiling mechanism of earlier designs, improving reliability, though the weapon never fully replaced the Type 11 and Type 96 and the three operated alongside each other throughout the war. Roughly 53,000 were produced from its introduction in 1939.
