The Chinese Civil War was fought between the government of the Republic of China, led by the Kuomintang, and the Chinese Communist Party. Armed conflict continued intermittently in two main phases, from 1 August 1927 until a truce during the Japanese invasion, and again from 1945, until the Kuomintang's retreat to Taiwan on 7 December 1949 following Communist victory; the Communists proclaimed the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949.
