Operation Provide Comfort was a multinational military and humanitarian mission launched on 6 April 1991 after the Gulf War to protect Kurdish refugees fleeing northern Iraq and deliver relief supplies. U.S., British, French and allied forces established a no-fly zone north of the 36th parallel and secured safe areas, including around Zakho, enabling displaced Kurds to return home; the mission continued as Operation Provide Comfort II until the end of 1996.
