Operation Atalanta is an ongoing European Union naval operation launched on 8 December 2008 to counter piracy off the coast of Somalia and protect World Food Programme shipping. The European Union Naval Force deploys warships and maritime patrol aircraft in the Gulf of Aden, the Somali Basin and, since an expanded mandate, the Red Sea, and its role has broadened to include monitoring arms trafficking and enforcing a United Nations arms embargo on al-Shabaab.
