The German invasion of Greece, code named Operation Marita, opened on 6 April 1941 and finished off the campaign that Italy had begun against Greece in October 1940. German troops attacked from Bulgaria and created a second front, outflanked the Greek forces holding the Albanian border and quickly overran the Metaxas defensive line. A small British, Australian and New Zealand force sent to help was overwhelmed and withdrew toward evacuation, holding the Thermopylae position for several days so that ships could be prepared. The Germans entered Athens on 27 April and reached the southern coast on 30 April, taking 7,000 Allied prisoners, and the capture of Crete a month later completed the conquest. Greece was then occupied by Germany, Italy and Bulgaria.
