The German invasion of Luxembourg took place on 10 May 1940 as part of Case Yellow (Fall Gelb), the German attack on Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and France in World War II, and it lasted a single day. Luxembourg had kept a policy of neutrality since 1867 and maintained only a small Volunteer Corps and the Grand Ducal Gendarmerie. The 1st, 2nd and 10th Panzer Divisions crossed the border at 04:35, drove over the tank traps of the Schuster Line and met no significant resistance. French cavalry probed from the south and a flight of British Fairey Battle bombers attacked German columns, but German troops quickly occupied the country. Grand Duchess Charlotte and the government escaped and formed a government in exile in London.
