The Colt Revolving Belt Pistol, commonly called the Navy Pistol, is a .36 caliber, six round cap and ball revolver designed by Samuel Colt between 1847 and 1850 and introduced in 1851. It was originally called the Ranger Size model and then the Revolving Belt before the Navy name became standard, and it remained in production until 1873, when the Colt Single Action Army replaced it. Roughly 215,000 were made domestically along with about 42,000 more from the Colt London Armory. Was the Colt 1851 Navy Revolver a naval weapon?
No. Despite the name, civilians and army forces bought it most; the name nods to a Texas Navy scene engraved on the cylinder.
Not mainly. Despite the Navy designation, the revolver was chiefly purchased by civilians and military land forces, according to Wikipedia. The name took over from earlier names, Ranger Size and Revolving Belt. It is usually linked to the engraving on the cylinder, which shows the victory of the Second Texas Navy at the Battle of Campeche on May 16, 1843, a gesture of appreciation from Samuel Colt to the Texas Navy, which had bought his earlier Paterson revolver.

The Colt Navy remained in production until 1873, being replaced in the Colt line with what would become one of the manufacturer's most famous handguns, the Colt Single Action Army (also known as the Peacemaker and Colt 45). Total production numbers of the Colt 1851 Navy Revolver were exceeded only by the Colt Pocket models in concurrent development, and numbered some 215,000 domestic units and about 42,000 produced in the Colt London Armory.
