Free State-Basotho Wars

The Free State-Basotho Wars were a series of conflicts fought from 1858 to 1868 between King Moshoeshoe I's Basotho kingdom and white settlers of the Orange Free State, comprising Senekal's War of 1858, the Seqiti War of 1865 to 1866, and the Third Basotho War of 1867 to 1868. Fighting centered on territorial disputes over land between the Caledon and Orange rivers, from present-day Wepener and Zastron north to Harrismith. The wars ended with the Free State acquiring large tracts of Basotho land, and with the Basotho eventually accepting British annexation and Crown protection as Basutoland.
