The M56 is a Yugoslav submachine gun chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, built by Crvena Zastava, later Zastava Arms, for the Yugoslav People's Army. Designed between 1955 and 1959 and produced from 1960 to 1975, almost 89,000 were built. It was developed from the pattern of the captured German MP 40 but reworked substantially, and its higher-velocity Tokarev round gave it better performance at range than the MP 40's 9mm cartridge.
