INSAS rifle

Small Arms And Sidearms

INSAS, short for Indian Small Arms System, is a family of infantry weapons comprising an assault rifle and a light machine gun, developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment of India and manufactured by the Ordnance Factories Board from 1994. It entered service in 1998 and became the standard infantry weapon of the Indian Armed Forces for nearly three decades, with an estimated 700,000 to 900,000 units built by 2019; it first saw combat in the 1999 Kargil War. India has since been phasing INSAS out in favor of the AK-203 assault rifle and the SIG 716i battle rifle, though it remains in use with police and paramilitary forces.
