Kargil War

The Kargil War was fought from May to July 1999 in the Kargil district of Indian-administered Kashmir, after Pakistani soldiers and allied militants covertly crossed the Line of Control and occupied strategic high-altitude positions on the Indian side. Indian forces launched Operation Vijay to dislodge them, backed by air power, and gradually recaptured the peaks after months of grueling high-altitude combat. Under sustained international pressure, particularly from the United States, Pakistan withdrew its remaining forces, restoring the pre-conflict line and marking the first open armed conflict between India and Pakistan since both had become declared nuclear-weapon states in 1998.
